Stop Starving Yourself; See Top Foods You Should Eat While Losing Weight

Posted by with No comments
It is very common among fat people or rather people who don't want to get fat to stay away from food. They believe that food could make them obese and is a great threat to their health, exposing them to many dangerous diseases.

However, most the foods they stay away from are actually harmless. They ignorantly ignore healthy foods and choose unhealthy ones, thinking it will help them lose weight.

Healthie.com.ng made some research and compiled some practices, foods and drinks that will make you add weight and others that do not, and that is what we're going to share with ourselves in this post.

You don't have to starve yourself before getting your desired weight anyway!

Practices That Cause Obesity.

There are some things you always do (and you may still be doing them now) that trigger your chances of getting overweight.  If you find yourself indulging in any of these, stop it! It might be the solution to your problem.

  • Eating processed or fast food high in fat. Processed food may contain a high proportion of fat you might not know about, so it is a good idea to stay away from processed and/or fast foods.
  • Drinking alcohol is not a healthy bargain for someone trying to lose some weight as alcohol contains a lot of calories and will help you gain weight like magic. So, stay away from alcohol.
  • Eating more food than you need. It is very bad to eat much food while trying to lose weight. Some people will skip a meal, say breakfast and eat lunch based on the principle that, I ate nothing this morning. This will do no good than adding more problems. Eat little meals slowly and regularly.
  • Sedentary lifestyle is bad if you will like to lose weight. From the sitting room to the dining table, to the bed, and back to the sitting room every day is not any good for your health. If you will truly like to lose weight, avoid a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Lack of exercise and activity is almost no different from sedentary lifestyle. But a person who works from morning till night sitting at a desk is not said to be living a sedentary lifestyle. But the fact is that, he or she might not have enough time to exercise, and this leaves adverse effects on the life of the victim.
  • Too much time spent watching television and browsing the internet can also act directly to helping one achieve a sedentary lifestyle, thereby adding excess weight.
  • Eating  some certain foods high in fat will make you add weight. The issue is, how do I know such foods that are high in fat and can help me gain weight?
  • Insufficient or too much sleep will not help in your weight loss campaign.
The last point on the list is the main question to be addressed in this article today.

What Foods Will Make You Obese?

There are baskets of food out there that will help you gain weight like never before, but trust me; not all foods you think will make you add up weight actually does so. There are some foods that are healthy for obese and non-obese people alike.

Foods That Are High In Fat.

As already stated, if you would like to maintain a healthy weight, there are a host of foods high in fat that you should stay away from. Some examples of foods that shouldn't be eaten by someone managing his or her weight includes;
  • Processed or red meats such as beef, pork, etc. These foods will easily increase your calories ad you add weight.
  • Sugary drinks like soda, soft drinks, etc. are not good for you if you're trying to lose weight.
  • White bread.
  • Pies, pastries and cakes.
  • Alcohol.
  • Candy bars.
  • Potato chips.

Foods That Won't Make You Obese.

As there are foods that will make you fat, there are also some foods that many people think will make you fat but actually don't. Examples of those foods are;

  • Whole eggs: Once being feared for a high calorie content, whole eggs has being cleared to be unconnected with weight gain.
  • Yogurt: The fact that yogurt won't make you add up weight remains a riddle yet to be solved. Scientists has not been able to explain the reason behind this fact. But anyway, it is the fact.
  • Vegetables: Yes! Healthy vegetables like green leafy vegetables, carrots, cucumbers, etc. will actually aid you in getting to your desired weight. They're not fattening, if they are not combined with high fat foods.
  • Citrus fruits: Citrus fruits like oranges and lemons will make you filled up, cutting down your intake of food. This will also help you in getting your desired weight, and will not make you fat. However, oranges are very sweet and should be eaten in moderation. Studies show that eating oranges with the peel will help you lose weight as it is found to contain anti-obesity properties.
  • Fishes: As meats are not a recommended source of protein for someone trying to lose weight, fishes will provide great help as they are not fatty. However, not much backup has been given to the fact that it will help you lose weight!
  • Olive oil: It is not recommended for fat people to take oils as they are very fatty. That's when olive oil comes to the rescue. Olive oils will not make you fat as presumed and should be used when you embark on your weight loss program.

That is the end of the article. Before I go, I leave you with these tips.

Weight Loss Tips.

  • Exercise regularly so as to burn the extra calories causing you to gain extra fat.
  • Avoid earing outside too much as most of the foods at birthdays, weddings and even restaurants like pies and cakes are unhealthy and very fatty.
  • Sleep sufficiently for at least seven hours every night but not longer than nine hours (if you're an adult).
  • Keep the television away from your room and limit the time you watch television.
  • Stay away from alcoholic drinks. For example beer.

We wish you success in your weight loss quest. Thanks for reading. Have any suggestions, corrections, complaints or questions, kindly drop it in the comments.

Pimples; Causes, Prevention And Treatment Of Pimples

Posted by with No comments

Meaning Of Pimples.

Pimples, also known as acne is an infection which happens when hair follicles plug with oil and dead skin cells clog to the pores.
Pimples is the most common skin disease as almost 100% of teenagers are usually affected by acne and up to twenty percentage of adults struggle with acne.

Pimples (or acne) are usually self-diagnosable as it is a physical condition which usually affects people on the skin. Pimples are also a self treatable and can sometimes disapear without any treatment.
Sometimes however, some stubborn types of pimples may refuse to go easily or may seem very painful or disfiguring, thereby making us look for possible treatments and this article is here to help.

Before we jump into the main section of the article, let's learn a few important facts about pimples (or acne).

  • There is only one way to get a pimple!
Do you think you got the ugly acne on your face from a friend, or probably a relative? If you think so, you're wrong. The only way by which you get pimples is when your face glands produce too much oil and combines with dead skin cells. This blocks your pores and follicles. Finally, bacteria develops in those blocked folicles and pores and you get pimples!

  • Overuse of pimples medications can worsen the condition!
Since most pimples medications are creamy, overuse of them would just mean shooting up the risk factors. This can lead to further clogging of follicles and pores, thereby causing more pimples.
  • There are six different types of pimples!
This seems like a pretty large number especially for the normal person. I always thought pimples was just a type of infection where something pops out of your face and you pop out the pus. Gradually was I to learn that pimples is far broader than than that. Six different types? Hmmm... We'll learn about this later.
  • Chocolates and fries causing pimples is a myth!
If you've asked about pimples from your friends and they mentioned something like: chocolates cause acne, it will be great to let them understand it's a myth and totally untrue.
Fried delicacies and chocolates has been confirmed unrelated to pimples according to several studies.
  • Excessive scrubbing is not good for your pimpled face.
Some people have the impression that pimples is caused by a dirty and oily face, and scrubbing out every bit of oil on your face will help to prevent the disease. It's true acne reactions can be triggered by an oily face, but it will not be a great idea to scrub off everything in your face. Why?
Scrubbing your face aggressively will irritate the skin and cause more breakouts (acne). Also, the more you scrub, the more your body produces more oil speeding up the process of acne generation.
  • Avoid excessive usage of mobile phones if you're prone to acne.
Pressing you phone against your cheeks may block oil glands and catapult chances of getting a breakout. A possible solution to this issue is the use of headsets, it will prevent you from making this mistake, thank me later. Lol!

I'm relieved to announce we're done with the first part of the article. But you can't deny you enjoyed the first part. Let's quickly move on to the next part which explains the types of pimples.

What Are The Types Of Pimples?

As already stated in the introductory part, there are six different types of pimples and they all differ in many ways, ranging from color, to size and harm it causes to the body.

Now, below are the six types of acne with little explanations.

  1. Whitehead: Also known as closed comedo is a common type of acne which happens when dead skin cells, oil and bacteria gets trapped. It usually takes a littletime and heals on its own, but medications can be tried.
  2. Blackheads: Blackheads are also a type of acne similar to whiteheads except for the fact that it is black at the surface.
  3. Papules: Papules are a lot more painful than whiteheads and blackheads. A papule is any small raised spot on the skin. It is usually red at the surface and treatable by drying lotions or spot treatments.
  4. Pustules: Pustules are inflamed, pus filled little bubbles. They are minor pimples and can be popped (not recommended though). Once it is popped, cover it with a patch until it heals.
  5. Cysts: Cysts are the worst type of acne. People are always scared of getting cysts, but once you get it, it can be treated by chemical exfoliation or fighting the infection by the services of a dermatologist.
  6. Nodles: Also one of the most severest forms of pimples. Nodles are normally not filled with pus and they don't always become red. They usually stay long if not treated, it may take weeks to go away.
Now that we know the six different types of pimples and how they operate, it is time to move on to the next part which explains some ways pimples can be prevented.

How To Prevent Pimples.

Pimples can be prevented in a number of ways. But before really going into the preventive measures, we need to know what causes acne.

As already stated, pimples can only be gotten from one source, the clogging of hair follicles and pores causing a breakout. However pimples has some risk factors which will be discussed as follows.

What Causes Pimples?

  • Dirty living environment catapults your risks of getting acnes according to several studies.
  • Excessive use of cellphones.
  • Using skincare that contains oil, these aggravates the condition and makes it worse.
  • Popping the pimples. Popping will leave scars on your face and inflame the bubbles.
  • Intake of sugary foods and foods like pizza, pies, etc. as these aggravates the infection.

Now that the risk factors of pimples is known, let's take ourselves to the preventions.

Preventions Of Pimples.

Pimples can be prevented in the following ways, though, it is not sure you won't have pimples if you follow all these measures, but the risks will be reduced.
  • Avoid making too much calls on your cellphone as this will involve pressing the phone to your cheeks and increasing the risks of clogging. However, if you have to make much calls, use headsets.
  • Limit your intake of foods related to acnes such as pizza. Healthie even recommends that you stay away from chocolates even though it has been confirmed unrelated to pimples. But remember; there is no story that isn't true!
  • Avoid popping the pimples as this will leave you face scarry and make it hurt.
  • Live clean and exercise, exercise does not aggravate pimples!

That done, we quickly move into the conclusive part of this article. This is probably what you've been waiting for and it explains how to remove pimples naturally and permanently.

 How Do I Treat My Pimples?

There are a lot of pimples treatment out there but getting on which works perfectly without creating additional problems is the issue. Below are the recommended ways by which you can treat pimples.

  • Apply topical treatments: Topical treatments contains salycilic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Topical treatment helps for mild to moderate pimples but it's not as effective as prescriptions.
  • Exfoliation: Exfoliation is the process of removing dead cells from the skin. It is an effective way of treating acne but overdo may have adverse reactions.
  • Wash your face twice daily: This will help you stay clean and will not make your face too dry. Excessive scrubbing might remove the oil in your face, aggravating the symptoms.
  • See your dermatologist: This is probably the best way to get rid of pimples permanently. A trained medical professional knows what type of pimples you're suffering from and will help you cure your acnes better than any products can do.

47 XXX; The Triple X Syndrome

Posted by with No comments

The Triple X Syndrome?

Every normal female is born with pair of two chromosomes in each of her cells.triple X syndrome, also known as trisomy X or XXX is a rare medical condition where a female has an added X chromosome in each of her cells.

47 XXX

This condition is however applicable to only women and girls and it is gotten as a result of an was abnormality during reproduction. It is also almost harmless as most of the affected girls need no medications.

Causes Of The Triple X Syndrome.

Triple X syndrome is caused by a random event during the formation of reproductive cells. An error in the division of cells known as nondisjunction can result in reproductive cells with an abnormal number of chromosomes.

This condition is neither the fault of the male parent nor the female parent. It is a random event during reproduction that can not be dictated. It is also known to be very rare. 47 XXX is not normally inherited but a few cases of inheritance has been reported.

What Are The Symptoms Of The Triple X Syndrome?

A great many number of people with the condition has little or no symptoms. However, in some cases, there are a number of symptoms to watch out for. Examples of these symptoms are;
  • People with 47 XXX are usually taller than normal. However, this does not cause an abnormal or unusual appearance.
  • Many people with the triple x syndrome also have widely spaced eyes.
  • Learning and memory disabilities are common in people with trisomy.
  • Epicanthal folds. Epicanthal folds is a folding in the eye linings common among trisomy carriers.
After having the knowledge of the symptoms of the triple X syndrome, it will also be a good idea to know if you have this condition. The question is;

How Do I Know If I Have The Syndrome?

Oftentimes, the triple X syndrome may be without any symptoms. Due to this fact, there are not many ways by which you can detect a triple x carrier. The few ways you can know if someone has the syndrome.

An example of a way you can spot a 47 XXX carrier is an evident delay in development and learning. Some patients will have some delay in acquiring the motor skills like walking and sitting up. They may also develop some learning disabilities and may also suffer from poor memory.

However, this is not a certain way of diagnosing if someone has the syndrome. The most certain way is Karyotyping. Karyotyping is also known as chromosomal analysis. Chromosomal analysis is a medical examination of the chromosomes in the cells. This is a perfect way of diagnosing if you have the syndrome.

Chromosomal analysis can also be performed before a child is born, which means it is possible to know if an unborn baby is having the unusual chromosomes number.

The chromosomal analysis can be done in the hospital by a trained medical expert. Try to talk to your medical doctor for more details about chromosomal analysis.

Can Triple X Be Treated?

As the syndrome is not considered as an infection, it is currently not curable and there is no way to remove the extra X in the chromosomes. However, there are some things we can do to try to help people carrying triple X live normal lives.

Some of the people affected by triple X usually suffer from self afflicted health issues because they always feel depressed when they remember they are actually carrying an abnormality, forgetting that it might be totally harmless.

Below are a few tips we can follow to help people with the triple X syndrome.
  • Assistance and support: Because triple X carriers usually lag, it will do them a lot of good if we help them in their school work, etc. Although it is sometimes difficult to teach someone who is many times taller! lol.
  • Early intervention: Knowing early that a child has the triple X syndrome will help greatly in the upbringing of a child as the parents will easily know her defects and help her in those aspects. It is however necessary for the parents not to abuse or make the child feel inferior because of her condition.
  • Periodic screening: This is to regularly check the health condition of the carrier in an hospital by a medical professional and see how it could be developed.
  • Kidney and health evaluation: As this is not absolutely necessary, it is recommended to diagnose extra diseases in her system and kidney health because carriers of the triple x appear to be open to this dangerous diseases and if they're regularly checked, any malfunctions will be detected early and treated promptly.

Excessive sleep is also known as hypersomnia. Hypersomnia is the health condition where the body gets insufficient sleep due to many factors. Some of the many causes of hypersomnia include;

  • Alcoholism and smoking.
  • Depression.

  5. Death: This is the worst of all side effects and it may happen as a result of the mixture of all other side effects.

Another question that comes to mind after seeing the disadvantages of excessive sleep is "how do I know how long to sleep", so, we will quickly answer this and proceed.

How Long Should I Sleep?

There is no specific length of time defined for sleeping as there are are individual requirements for each and every body. However, there are recommendations by medical professionals which are as follows.

Babies should sleep for at least fifteen to eighteen hours a day. However, the requirements for teens and growing children are lower at about 7-9 hours daily. This number will reduce gradually as one grows older as people older than sixty can't sleep for longer than 6.5 hours a day.

That treated, the next and the last on our list for today is The Health Effects Of Sleepness.

What Are The Effects Of Sleeplessness?

Sleeplessness also known as insomnia has many health hazards the condition itself is an illness. The health hazards of insomnia as compiled by healthie.com.ng are just as the same as that of too much sleep which includes diabetes, body pains, etc.

In addition to that, insomnia can also cause some other issues such as difficulty in concentration, learning issues, memory difficulties, etc.

Conclusion: Get enough sleep, schedule your sleep and beware of catarrh and cough syrups. Stay healthie, forever.

Smoking Cessation; How To Quit Smoking Without Much Side Effects

Posted by with No comments
What Is Smoking?
Smoking is the act of taking substances (usually tobacco) into the body, causing a psychological effect.

However, tobacco is not the only substance which can be smoked. Smokers also smoke the following drugs;

  1. Cannabis.
  2. Opium.
  3. Datura.
  4. Salvia divinorum.
  5. Cocaine.
  6. Methamphetamine.
  7. Black tar heroine.
  8. Phencyclidine, etc.
Why Do People Smoke Drugs?

It is such a surprise that despite all the advertised side effects and disadvantages of smoking, many people still take part in this addictive activity. The question is; Why do people smoke?

Smoking is unarguably very harmful to human body as it causes a variety of health issues such as cancer. But despite all the advocacy and visible effects of smoking, why do people smoke?

People smoke for a various reasons, popular reasons for smoking include;

  • To Fit In: This is what I describe as the stupidest reason for smoking. People want to keep up to their mates out there and they find out their mates do smoke, so, they smoke.
  • To Escape From A Problem: Thousands of people actually smoke because they are trying to stop thinking about a particular topic or forget about something. But no, smoking won't make you forget; it would just steal your memory when you are under its influence and return your problems later, coupled with the fact that you're now a smoker.
  • Relieves Stress: Smokers believe smoking will help them relieve stress. This is untrue because smoking will just cool you down (sedative) and it interferes quickly with your brain, increasing chances of brain disorder.
  • Weight Loss: People also resolve to smoking because it will help them lose weight. This is partially true because when you smoke, signals are sent to the brain that the body is full. This will make you eat less but is totally unhealthy because it can cause brain damage as a result of interference with the activities of the brain.
  • Because Their Parents Do It: Many teenagers are misled by their careless parents who smoke and they copy it from them. This accounts for most of the reasons why the youngest smokers smoke.
These accounts for most of the reasons why people started smoking.

What comes to mind after knowing the reasons why people smoke is the question; Why Can't They Stop Smoking?

It is very difficult to stop smoking once you've started. Why is this?

Cigarettes contain substances which are addictive. Notable among this substances is Nicotine.

What Is Nicotine?
Nicotine is a colourless substance which is gotten from tobacco plant. Nicotine quickly becomes addictive and is an important ingredient of the cigarette.
Nicotine is so addictive that it is as difficult to give up as heroine.
Why Should You Stop Smoking Nicotine?
Nicotine causes the following problems;

  • Dizziness.
  • Irregular and disturbed sleep.
  • Bad dreams or nightmares.
  • Vomiting
  • Heartburn.
  • Ulcer.
  • Diarrhoea, etc.
Unfortunately, nicotine is a highly addictive drug which you can't just stop using. If you suddenly stop using nicotine, you must face the withdrawal symptoms which includes (but is not limited to);

1. Emptiness.
2. Craving.
3. Anxiety.
4. Difficulty in concentration.
5. Depression, etc.

Because of these fearful symptoms, most smokers return to smoking in less than hours or days after they quit. However, nicotine is not the only substance that is smoked in a cigarette. Other substances include;
  • Tar is a sticky brown substance which causes cancer.
  • Carbon monoxide.
  • Arsenic.
  • Ammonia.
  • Acetone.
  • Toluene.
  • Methylamine, etc.

Back to the track. It is said that cigarette is very difficult to quit once it is started. The next question to be answered is, Is It Possible To Stop Smoking Once You Started?

The correct answer is yes! There area lot of success stories of people who successfully quit smoking and are living happily since. Now, the next big question now is;

How Do I Stop Smoking Once I've Started?

Smoking Cessation is possible but very difficult. It usually comes loaded with packs of side effects, but who knows, you might be lucky and escape all. Before we go into the processes of teaching ourselves how to stop smoking, we need to learn about the effects of smoking cessation.

What may happen to me if I quit smoking?

There are some lot of problems associated with quitting smoking, but bear it in mind that it will never be as servere as the dangers of smoking itself and these will disappear soon, but with continous smoking, it will never disappear.
Here are examples of such issues;

  • Nicotine Cravings: This is a situation where the body yearns for the most addictive drug in tobacco, nicotine. This is usually not fun as most peolpe who try to quit smoking turn back at this point. Remember this will not last forever but during the time it will last, it wil be challenging.
How Do You Control Nicotine Cravings?

Nicotine cravings will be uncomfortable but you have to wait it out. It usually lasts for less than fifteen minutes but believe me, it will not be fun. Here are a few tips to help you while you have the cravings.
  1. Take long brisk walks.
  2. Chew some gum, this helps to keep your mouth busy!
  3. Slow deep breaths will help, breathe away the cravings.
  4. Do something else. Once you've got the cravings, stop whatever you are doing and start doing something else. This helps.

Another issue which may pop up when you decide to stop smoking is;

  • Mood Swings: The dysregulation of the endocrines (hormonal) and central nervous systems does not only cause extreme changes in mood, it also triggers increased physiological rate which includes increased blood pressure, increased heart beat rate, difficulties in concentration and sometimes memory loss. However, this is a temporary issue.
  • Serious Cough.
  • Constipation.
  • Weight gain due to snacking.
  • Irregular and disturbed sleep.

Those are the major challenges you might face when trying to stop smoking suddenly. Now, it is time to share a few tips on how to stop smoking without experiencing or rather experiencing much of the aforementioned effects.

How To Quit Smoking Without Much Side Effects.

Here are a few tips that will help you stop without many effects.

How To Grow A Beautiful Healthy Baby

Posted by with No comments
It is the desire of every young parent to give birth to a beautiful baby whom they can always boast of to their friends.
The above picture clearly illustrates my point. Nobody is willing to give birth to a pikin, or do you? Lol.

Now let's move straight into the topic. Giving birth to a baby (as pictured above) is not an automatic process, it requires some sacrifices which must be carried out (not fetish though) and if you're not careful, you might end up giving birth to a pikin.

In order to give birth to a beautiful baby, there are a few things you must do during pregnancy, which leads us to the question;

How Do I Give Birth To A Beautiful Baby?
Pregnancy Tips

  • Never Skip Breakfeast: Skipping breakfast will be very dangerous for your health and the health of your baby. Breakfast won't help you add weight, instead, you'll be able to manage your weight.
  • Take Vitamins With Iron And Folic Acid Regularly: Iron will keep you healthy and ready for the birth of your baby, while folic acid prevents birth defects which will keep your baby beautiful, which is the main reason we are reading this. Examples of foods containing folic acid include leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, beans, bread, etc. Eating lots of dark leafy green vegetables like spinach is essential for a pregnant woman because it contains both nutrients!
  • Exercise Regularly: The popular saying that exercises will harm your baby is totally a myth. Exercise will control your baby's weight and make delivery easier. So, exercise regularly.
  • Take Care With Food: To keep fit and healthy, a pregnant woman should take special care with food. Overcook your food, especially meat if possible because it helps to kill some bacteria which may endanger the health of your child.
  • Eat Small But Often: Because this aids digestion, makes you feel comfortable and prevents nausea and sickness.
  • Attend Antenatal Regularly: You should not be told to do this but you may not know antenatal helps you and your child, so be regular.
These are the rules you have to follow properly during pregnancy in order to ensure that you deliver your healthy and beautiful baby.

Now that you have given birth to your new beautiful and healthy baby, it's time to learn about the next steps in ensuring that your baby grows as a beautiful and healthy baby.

After a child is born, there are a number of steps that must be taken to ensure the baby maintains the beauty he/she had since birth.

These Include Early Measures Such As
  • Vaccinations: Make sure your child is vaccinated against all diseases that may disfigure him or her. Remember, a sick child can not be beautiful. A beautiful sick baby is just like a plastic gold, it may look appealing to the eye, but inside, it lacks lustre.
  • Exercising: Yes, exercise! Teach your child a few simple exercises, it would help him grow strong, healthy and beautiful but otherwise, he/she would just grow fat and add up weight and a fat baby can never be beautiful, hope you know?
  • Play: Allow your baby play. Playing will help your child develop a healthy, strong and sharp brain. It is recommended to buy a few toys for the baby which will keep him happier. You can also allow your child to play with his or her peers as it will improve your baby's relationship with others.
  • Learning: Talk to your baby, it will help him/her learn how to talk faster than you can imagine.
Also try to always make your baby smile by smiling at him. Encourage your child to smile at others too. If your child never smiles or cries excessively, take him or her to a doctor as the baby may be ill.

Also, growing the right hair can make you your baby more beautiful. In respect of this, I compiled a few tips that can make your child grow the right hair.

How Can I Grow The Right Air For My Baby?

  • Oiling The Air: There are a few oils out there which can make your baby's hair grow faster and more beautiful. Examples are coconut oil, thyme oil, almond oil, lemon oil, etc. as they provides moisture for hair growth.
  • Aloe Vera: Aloe vera is a very essential plant as it helps in virtually every thing in the body; skin, face, and now hair. Using aloe vera will help grow your hair very fast and it works like magic.
  • Grooming: Run a comb gently on over the scalps on your child's air to help blood circulation. You can also disentangle hair curls as the curls may come off, leaving a bald spot on the baby's hair.

Those are the baby's beautiful tips that can be shared today. Click on subscribe at the top of your screen to get our future posts via email. Thanks for reading.

Revealed: What You Should Know About Palmwine

Posted by with 1 comment
Palmwine, often gotten from the sap of palm trees such as palmyra, date palm and coconut palms is a very sweet beverage usually enjoyed as a local drink.
palm wine

Palmwine is common among local people in Africa who use the wine for a great number of purposes including drinking, worshipping of their local gods, used at social gatherings and so much more.

How Is Palmwine Gotten?

A palm wine tapper, the primary producer of palmwine taps a palm tree by making a hole at the top of the tree. He fastens a gourd or container to the tree to collect a whitish liquid, the palmwine.

Alternatively, a whole tree can be felled and the palm wine could be easily tapped but this is not a recommended way of tapping palm wine because it wastes resources.

The palmwine occurs as a cloudy whitish liquid and it has a sweet alcoholic taste.

Palm wine has a number of advantages; it has disadvantages too though.

Palmwine is a well known drink in Africa, probably the most popular beverage at a given point in time. But due to some reasons, in recent years, it got a drop in it's popularity. People stopped drinking palmwine for a few reasons which include:

  • The introduction of other better beverages.
  • The alcoholic content of the beverage.

Generally, palmwine is well known for it's alcoholic content, but there is a fact you must know: PALMWINE INITIALLY CONTAINS NO ALCOHOL!
You may be surprised to hear this fact but it is the truth.
When palmwine is freshly tapped from the tree, it has a high sucrose (sugar) content of about 13.0 per cent of sugar and NO alcoholic content. Palmwine at this stage is very sweet with no alcohol. If you can get to taste a glass of this kind of wine, then you just tasted the real palm wine.

But, after about three hours, fermentation begins. The fermentation process is caused by the presence of yeast cells in the palmwine and when they reproduce, they emit ethanol which is alcohol, and that is the only source of alcohol in the beverage. The more fermentation takes place, the more alcoholic content in the beverage.

The fermentation converts about half of the sugar to alcohol which means about 6.0 per cent alcohol and 7.0 per cent sugar in less than 24 hours. Palmwine at this stage is still sweet but alcohol is now present, which means excessive drinking will lead to intoxication.

When the Palmwine is about 24 hours old, it starts losing most of it's sugar content and gets replaced by alcohol, thereby developing a sour taste. This is usually the wine that gets to us and the sour nature of the wine plus the alcoholic content accounts for the declining demand for palmwine.

In order to prevent the palmwine from getting to this unfavourable stage, palmwine tappers tried adding a substance to the wine to be able to preserve it for a very long rime without getting to this sour state but they realised that they were only redcing the features and benefits of the sweet beverage.

After we've known something about palmwine, it's time to know it's advantages and disadvantages.

What are the advantages of palmwine?

Palmwine has a number of advantages associated with it's use. They include.

  • It improves vision: Freshly tapped palmwine contains some nutrients such as vitamins C and B which helps in promoting good eyesight.

It is sometimes said that our grandparents have better eyesight than us. The reason might be because the palmwine is their beverage!

  • Builds the body structure: Protein is body building food; Protein becomes amino acid after digesting; Palmwine contains amino acid. It is no wonder that proteins greatly helps in building the body.

  • Promotes the health of the heart: Palmwine contains potassium which is a great fighter of cardiovascular diseases. However too much potassium in the body can lead to serious and deadly health problems.
  • It also helps to prevent cancer though this won't make a good beverage for cancer patients.

There are also more benefits of this drink we won't be mentioning now, but let's quickly move on to the disadvantages.

What are the disadvantages of palmwine?

Everything with advantages should have disadvantages (a marketing teacher said). In the case of palmwine, he's right. Let's quickly see the disadvantages of palm wine.

The side effects of palmwine are caused mainly by the high alcoholic content, some are;

  • Hypertension: Palmwine can cause hypertension because of the high potassium content in the beverage. However, only excessive taking will cause this though!

  • Neurological problems: Many people who take palmwine usually have some problems with their head, caused by excessive intake. This is usually because of the high concentration of alcohol when it is completely fermented. This is applicable to all alcoholic drinks. Please, be careful with alcoholic drinks!

  • Forgetfulness: If you take so much wine, you'ld easily forget things as a result of the high alcoholic concentration in the wine.

  • Wasteful spending: People could easily get addicted to palmwine and exhaust every given cash on the beverage, this wouldn't make sense!

FACT: A completely fermented palmwine is stronger than most local gins!
