Health Minister Promises Improvement in NCDC Development

The Nigerian Health minister disclosed the intentions of the federal government to further make the development of the Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC), a top priority, stating that it's an asset to the nation.

While on a visit to the NCDC laboratory, National Reference Laboratory (NRL) in Gaduwa, Abuja, Dr. Osagie Ehanire made the statement as a way to express delight at the relative success made by the body, since its inception in 2017.

While on parts of his routine visits to the to agencies and departments governed by the ministry of health, Dr. Osagie toured the facilities of the laboratory, and interacted with the laboratory staff.

The routine visits are important to ensure that the agencies are working towards the goals and aspirations of the ministry which is primarily aimed at improving the health of Nigerians, the minister disclosed.
While on the tour, the minister observed operations in core parts of the laboratory including the mega-laboratory, biorepository, etc.

During the visit, the minister said: "Public health is a major priority for the Government of Nigeria. We are very proud that this facility exists and provides critical laboratory functions for the country. We will continue to prioritise its development as an important asset for Nigeria".

He also congratulated the agency on the successes achieved in recent years, describing it as a notable achievement especially in the country's current need of an efficient resource use in the country.

In response to the nice gestures by the minister, the Director-General of the Nigerian Center for Disease Control, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu warmly received the minister with his team, stressing the agency's goals of a strong public health laboratory resource structure in Nigeria.

Dr. Chikwe also stressed the importance of support from similar agencies like the World Health Organization, Robert Koch Institute, Public Health England, and other, noting that they did a great deal in improving the capacity for public health laboratory services in Nigeria.

Mr. Chikwe also disclosed that the the National Resource Laboratory remains the head of all public health laboratory in the country while counting the successes of the agency. He also revealed that the laboratory has the mandate of coordinating diagnosis of diseases of public importance.

From his speech, it was learnt that the laboratory is capable of molecular diagnosis of viral diseases such as Lassa Fever, monkeypox, rubeller, meningitis, etc.

The tour serves as an indication that all may be going well with the Nigerian health sector, and favorable corroboration is absolutely taking place.
